Elizabeth from Colorado asks us,
"Is it considered unsophisticated to use votives as part of table decorations at events these days?"
Certainly not. What you can do to give them a brush-up is use them in interesting containers, although, the simple clear votive holder will never go out of style. But, you can use small lanterns and other visually appealing and varied options that go with the theme of your table setting. And, yes, your table setting should always have a concept.
Remember that the only hard and fast rules of setting your table are these: you need something to put food on and drinks in, you need something to serve them out of, and you need something to serve them. The rest is all your imagination.
I've always loved the use of votives, even in their simplest clear votive cups. Here's why you should never stop using them: Scatter votives around the food at your table. Fill all the water glasses to their brims with ice before guests are seated. Make sure plenty of votives are around the flowers at your table. The light shining up from those votives will make the water glasses twinkle and they will serve another purpose in lighting up your flowers and the food you serve in beautiful and flattering ways. It'll make your guests look amazing, too. Everything and everybody looks beautiful in reflected candlelight. Beauty never goes out of style.
